Milan borrowed his friend Theo's warm coat for an outdoor wedding. During the evening, the sleeve caught on a sharp fence and tore. The damage was small enough to hide under his hand, and Milan spent the journey home wondering whether Theo would even notice it.
He had planned to return the coat the next morning. Instead, he kept it for three days and avoided Theo's messages. By then, the torn sleeve was no longer the only problem. Milan felt uncomfortable whenever his phone made a sound, even when the message came from someone else.
Finally, he visited Theo with the coat and explained exactly what had happened. He offered to pay for a repair. Theo looked disappointed, but not mainly about the sleeve. He had needed the coat on Monday and had wondered why his friend was ignoring him. Milan apologised for making him guess.
They took the coat to a repair shop together. The repair would leave a visible line, which Theo accepted after seeing a sample. Milan paid and collected it two days later. When he returned it, he included a note giving the real date of the accident. Theo smiled at the unnecessary detail. The next time Milan borrowed something, he returned it before anyone had to ask.
