For years, the chair beside the window had belonged to Nina's father. After he died, nobody sat there. Her mother dusted it every week, and family visitors chose other seats even when the room was crowded. The empty chair seemed to give everyone instructions they had never discussed.
One rainy afternoon, Nina's small son climbed into it with a book. Nina immediately asked him to move. He looked confused and asked whether the chair was broken. Her mother, standing in the doorway, said that it was not. Then she asked Nina why they were treating it that way.
Nina could not explain without crying. She was afraid that using the chair would mean they were getting used to her father's absence. Her mother sat beside her on the sofa. She said that missing him was already part of their lives, whether the chair was occupied or empty.
Together, they moved it closer to the lamp, where reading would be easier. Nina's son climbed back in and asked for a story about his grandfather. This time, Nina told him about the terrible songs her father invented on long car trips. Her mother supplied the words. By evening, the chair was still his old chair, but it also held a new memory.
