At the community lunch, everyone called Leo's grandfather Mr Harris. Leo had always called him Grandad, so hearing his surname felt strangely formal. While they waited for soup, a woman in a yellow coat came over and called him Danny. His face changed completely.
On the bus home, Leo asked about the name. His grandfather said that Danny was what his friends had called him when he worked at a cinema. Leo had never heard about that job. He knew the stories about school and marriage, but not the years between them.
His grandfather described carrying film boxes upstairs and meeting friends after the last show. Once, they had stayed out so late that he arrived home when his father was leaving for work. Leo laughed. It was difficult to connect this young man with the careful grandfather who always arrived early.
A week later, Leo made a name card for their next lunch together. He wrote Danny on one side and Grandad on the other. His grandfather turned it around several times before choosing Danny. Then he told Leo another cinema story, this time about a terrible haircut. Leo listened without interrupting. There were apparently several versions of his grandfather, and he wanted to meet the others.
