The Bonus on the Noticeboard

After a busy summer, the campsite owner announced a bonus for the staff. Everyone smiled until the amounts appeared on the noticeboard. Full time workers received more than those with shorter contracts, but nobody could see how the difference had been calculated.

Safa worked only weekends, when the campsite was busiest. She thought the system ignored difficult shifts. Her friend Emil worked throughout the week and felt that the total number of hours should matter. Their disagreement became tense because each believed the other was calling their work less valuable.

The owner called a meeting and admitted that the notice had been too brief. She showed that the amounts were based on recorded hours. Staff checked the records and found one missing weekend for Safa. That mistake was corrected. The owner also listened to suggestions about recognising unusually demanding shifts in future seasons.

Safa still preferred a different system, while Emil thought the existing one was fair enough. They did not force themselves to agree. On the last evening, they packed chairs together and discussed which shifts they might take next year. The bonus had become a number they could question and understand, rather than a silent judgment pinned above the kettle. That made working together easier, even without complete agreement.
