A Cake Outside the Competition

The bakery announced an internal cake competition. The winning baker would represent the shop at a regional event. Mira loved decorating cakes, and her coworkers immediately began suggesting designs she could enter. She smiled, but the deadline filled her with dread.

She was already taking care of the early bread orders and learning to train a new apprentice. Entering would mean practising late at night. The prize sounded exciting, yet she was more interested in becoming a steady trainer than in travelling to an event with cameras and judges.

Mira told the manager she would not enter this year. He looked surprised but accepted her answer. One younger baker, Stefan, asked whether she would give him feedback on his design during their normal practice time. She agreed, provided they kept within the hour already allowed for learning new techniques.

Stefan did not win. His cake leaned slightly to one side, and he was furious with himself. Mira helped him examine the base and record what had gone wrong. The next week, his second attempt stood perfectly straight. Mira felt proud, without wishing her own name were on the entry form. When customers arrived, she cut the practice cake into samples and let the useful experiment become breakfast.
