A small design studio invited Ada to complete a free sample before discussing paid work. At first, the task sounded reasonable: draw a simple picture of a shop entrance. Ada wanted experience, so she agreed to spend an hour on it.
The instructions soon changed. The studio requested three versions, exact colours and a finished file by the following morning. Ada recognised the shop's name in the brief. It was a real client, not an imaginary exercise. Completing everything would take most of her evening.
She replied that she could provide her existing portfolio or do the larger task for an agreed fee. Her hand hovered over the send button. Perhaps this was how beginners proved themselves, she thought. But she had already shown examples of her work, and the new request was much closer to a real order.
The studio answered that its process could not change. Ada withdrew from consideration and spent the evening finishing a poster for a paying customer. She did not know whether refusing had cost her a useful opportunity. The uncertainty remained uncomfortable. Still, when she saved the finished poster, she could name the work she had done, the time it had taken and the person who had agreed to pay for it.
