Then I remembered a weekend when I had wanted to stay home without explaining my reasons to anyone. I wrote, 'Thank you for letting me know. You are welcome another time.' Amira sent a small heart and wished us a good evening.
The gathering was pleasant, although I missed her. On Monday, she asked if I wanted to meet for a short walk. I said yes, and we spent half an hour talking about ordinary things. She did not explain Saturday, and I did not ask.
Before we went home, Amira invited me to lunch the next week. I checked my calendar and accepted. Her earlier refusal had been about one invitation, not our whole friendship. Our next plan was already there, written between two other notes in my phone.
