At the pottery club, Hazel always sat beside her friend Mei. When Hazel missed a week, a new member called Sandra used the empty chair. The following Thursday, Sandra sat there again, and Hazel stopped with her bag in her hands.
Hazel almost asked Sandra to move. Then she remembered that the club did not have reserved seats. Mei smiled and introduced them. There was a free chair on Sandra's other side, so Hazel sat there and unpacked her clay and tools.
During the lesson, Sandra had trouble making the handle of a cup. Hazel showed her a simple way to attach it. Mei watched too, because her own handles often broke. Soon, all three women were comparing cups across the same table.
At the end, Sandra asked where she should sit next week. Hazel told her to choose any free place. Then she asked both women if they wanted tea before going home. The café had a round table, and nobody needed the middle chair.
