Three families organized an evening of music in our shared garden. Everyone brought chairs and snacks, and the children made paper stars. The evening went well, but when the music stopped, two families began saying goodbye while ours collected the rubbish.
My father asked the others to stay for ten more minutes. He explained that the party belonged to all three families, including the cleaning afterward. One neighbor said she had not thought about it. She had assumed we preferred to tidy things ourselves.
We divided the remaining jobs. One family collected cups, another folded chairs, and we took down the paper stars. The children checked under the tables for anything left behind. With everyone helping, the garden was clear before the streetlights came on.
For the next party, we wrote the cleanup time on the invitation. It came directly after the music, not as a surprising extra job. The neighbors arrived knowing the whole plan, and my father finally had time to sit through the last song.
