Our Sunday walking group almost became two separate clubs. Some members liked a fast walk with few stops. Others preferred a slower pace and time to talk. At the end of each walk, one group was tired and the other was impatient.
During a meeting, Felix suggested starting together and choosing two different routes. The fast route could be longer, while the slow route passed through the small park. Both groups would arrive at the same café at eleven for a shared drink.
We tested the plan the following Sunday. I chose the slower route because I wanted to catch up with a friend. Felix took the longer one with five others. We reached the café first and found a table large enough for everyone.
The fast walkers arrived ten minutes later, smiling and warm. Nobody complained about waiting because we were already talking over tea. Next week, I may choose the longer route. My club membership no longer depends on how quickly I want to walk that morning.
