A short river boat tour left from the town quay every Saturday. Alice booked a seat because she wanted to see the old warehouses from the water. She expected the boat to turn around before reaching the low road bridge.
Near the bridge, the boat slowed down. A red light stopped the cars above, and barriers came down across the road. Alice heard a bell. Then the middle part of the bridge began to rise slowly in front of the waiting boat.
The guide explained that the boat was too tall to pass under the closed bridge. Alice watched the space grow until they could move through. People on the pavement waved down at the passengers. She waved back and looked up at the huge structure.
On the return trip, the boat used a landing on the other side, so the bridge did not need to open again for them. Alice walked across it to reach the bus stop. From the pavement, she looked at the quiet water and remembered the view from below.
