The lake looked calm when Julia and Amos hired a pedal boat. A worker gave them life jackets and showed them the steering handle. They listened carefully, then pushed away from the landing for a short trip inside the marked area.
At first, both of them pedalled quickly. The boat moved forward, but Julia turned the handle too far. They began going in a wide circle. Amos laughed, then realised they were coming back towards the same red marker again.
They stopped pedalling and talked about what to do. Amos would pedal slowly while Julia moved the handle a little at a time. The boat soon travelled in a straight line. After a few minutes, they changed jobs so both could practise.
They reached the far side of the allowed area and turned back well before their time ended. Near the landing, they slowed down as the worker had explained. Julia stepped onto dry ground and asked Amos about another trip. He agreed, but suggested a longer straight section next time.
