For his day off, Victor planned a ride on the town's double-decker bus. The route passed the river, the market and the football ground. He wanted a front seat upstairs so he could take photographs through the large window.
At the first stop, he met his neighbour, Mrs Bell. She was going to the riverside flower show and carried a folding walking stick. Victor helped her read the route map. Then they boarded the bus together through the front door.
Mrs Bell chose a seat downstairs because she found the steps difficult. Victor could still go upstairs, but she began telling him about the old streets outside. He sat nearby and asked where the town's first cinema had stood.
During the ride, Mrs Bell pointed out places that were not on his map. Victor took fewer pictures than he expected. At the flower show stop, they said goodbye. He stayed downstairs for the rest of the ride, looking for the old shop signs she had described.
