In a practical shop skills class, students learnt to wrap different products. Most chose square boxes from the teacher's table. Jamil chose a watering can because he sometimes packed garden tools at work. Its long spout and large handle made the task difficult.
He tried covering it with one sheet of paper, but the paper tore around the spout. His partner suggested using more tape. After several attempts, the parcel looked untidy and the handle was still outside. Jamil stopped and asked the teacher for another method.
The teacher brought a box with enough room for the whole can. Jamil added paper around it so it could not move, then closed the box. Now he had a regular shape to wrap. He finished with far less tape than before.
For the next exercise, he chose an unusual lamp. Before touching the wrapping paper, he looked for a suitable box. His partner laughed and passed him one. At the end of class, Jamil's two parcels looked plain, firm and ready to carry.
