At the first jewellery class, the adults sat around one long workbench. Bea arrived last and found only a narrow space at the end. The other students had spread bags, coats and tools across the whole surface. She could barely place her notebook down.
Bea asked the teacher where she should work. He looked at the table and apologised. He had explained the tools but forgotten to discuss shared space. Everyone moved bags and coats to the hooks by the door. Suddenly, the workbench looked much bigger.
The teacher gave each student a small tray for tools and loose beads. Bea chose a tray near the middle so she could see his hands during the demonstration. The class began making simple bracelets, choosing colours and measuring string around their wrists.
One student's beads rolled towards Bea, but the edge of her tray stopped them falling. She returned them with a smile. At the end, every tray fitted neatly on a shelf, leaving the workbench ready for the next group without a long clean-up.
