There are chess tables under the trees in Central Park. Irene knows how the pieces move, but she does not play often. Today she stops to watch a game.
Two men are playing, and a woman sits beside them. There is one empty chair. The woman points to it. Irene sits down and keeps her bag on her knees.
After the game, one man asks Irene to play. She says she is a beginner. He turns the board around and gives her the white pieces. She moves a pawn first.
Irene loses a piece quite quickly. The man shows her why. She laughs and looks more carefully at the board. She stays for a second game before her afternoon walk.
