The Volunteer Who Stopped Smiling

For years, everyone at the community kitchen described Ada as endlessly cheerful. She arrived early, remembered dietary requirements and accepted extra shifts without complaint. When a coordinator introduced her as the person who never said no, the room applauded. Ada smiled automatically, then spent the bus journey home feeling as though someone had announced a sentence rather than a compliment.

She still believed in the kitchen's work. That made her irritation difficult to explain, even privately. People needed meals, and she had time. Yet having time had somehow become an agreement to surrender it whenever there was a gap in the rota. She wanted to attend a Saturday film club, a reason that sounded embarrassingly small beside hunger.

The next week, she removed her name from two shifts. The coordinator asked whether something was wrong. Ada said nothing was wrong, which confused him more than an emergency would have. She explained that she would work on Wednesdays only. He looked worried about finding replacements, and she resisted offering to solve the very problem her decision had just created.

On her first free Saturday, the film was disappointing. Ada nearly left early to help at the kitchen. Instead, she stayed for the discussion and argued with a stranger about the ending. On Wednesday, she returned to chopping onions. A new volunteer asked why everyone said she was cheerful. Ada laughed, then said they had probably mistaken reliability for a permanent mood.
