The Gesture Test During Lunch

A technology laboratory asked office workers to test a camera system that recognised hand gestures. Participation was described as voluntary, and each tester would receive lunch. Team leader Malik encouraged his staff to join because the researchers needed varied participants. He was pleased when almost everyone signed up, until one colleague quietly asked whether refusing would look unhelpful.

Malik had intended a friendly invitation, not an instruction. Yet it had arrived in the same team chat he used to assign work. The test also took place during lunch, when staff could see who attended and who stayed away. A consent form could say voluntary without removing the pressure created by the person making the request.

He told the researchers that recruitment should happen through a separate channel and that managers should not receive attendance lists. They agreed, but pointed out that lunches had already been ordered. Malik offered the meals to everyone, regardless of participation. This meant the researchers lost one incentive, though they still found enough volunteers after explaining what recordings they would keep and when those recordings would be deleted.

Malik did not attend the test himself. He worried that standing beside the camera might make his earlier reassurance less convincing. The colleague who had raised the issue chose to participate and later described the experience enthusiastically. Another chose not to. Malik made no attempt to discover why. At the following staff meeting, he discussed the week's work without mentioning the experiment, allowing refusal to remain what it had supposedly been all along: an ordinary choice without a penalty.
