A Spare Key With Conditions

After her mother moved nearby, Irena gave her a spare key for emergencies. Soon, she came home to folded washing and soup in the fridge. At first, this seemed like a wonderful arrangement. Then her mother reorganised the kitchen cupboards, placing the mugs where she believed mugs naturally belonged. Irena spent ten minutes searching before calling to ask.

Her mother sounded hurt. She had climbed on a chair despite a painful knee, and now Irena was complaining about free help. Irena thanked her, which ended the conversation without resolving anything. For the rest of the evening, she opened the wrong cupboard automatically and felt unreasonable anger at a row of plates that had committed no offence.

On Saturday, she visited her mother with groceries and tried again. She wanted company, she explained, but not an improved version of herself waiting whenever she returned home. Her mother said an empty afternoon felt worse when she knew there were useful things she could do nearby. Neither statement cancelled the other, and for a while they sat silently.

They agreed that the key would stay in a sealed envelope and that visits would be arranged first. Her mother disliked the envelope, calling it dramatic, but signed across the flap with a flourish. The next Tuesday, she came for dinner and asked where the mugs were. Irena pointed to the cupboard she had chosen. Her mother raised an eyebrow, then opened it.
