A Cloud Account at Midnight

At eleven on Friday night, community radio producer Bea received a warning that the station's storage account would close at midnight. The subscription had belonged to a volunteer who had left after a disagreement. He had paid for it personally for years, and nobody had transferred responsibility when the station began depending on it.

Bea called him, expecting another argument. Instead, he sounded relieved that someone had finally noticed his earlier messages. He was not trying to destroy the recordings; he simply could not continue paying. The archive contained interviews, music programmes and a series of oral histories that existed nowhere else. Downloading everything over Bea's home connection would take longer than an hour.

The former volunteer offered to renew the account for one month if the station reimbursed him immediately. Bea had no authority to approve expenses, and the treasurer was asleep. She paid him herself, then sent the committee a blunt message explaining why this emergency had occurred. She deliberately left out details of the old disagreement, which were irrelevant to the ownership of the files.

On Monday, the committee reimbursed both volunteers and opened an account controlled by the organisation. It also created an offline copy of the archive and recorded who could manage access. Bea expected an apology from the chair; what arrived was a request to lead the entire transfer. She declined and offered one training session instead. Saving the archive once did not mean she had agreed to become its permanent unpaid insurance policy.
