During a neighbourhood litter survey, volunteers marked busy rubbish spots on a shared map. By the end of the weekend, most streets had several coloured dots. One street remained completely blank. At the meeting, someone suggested praising its residents for keeping everything so clean. Liv was not convinced.
She checked the volunteer list and found that nobody had surveyed that street. Two people had assumed that the other would cover it, so both had walked elsewhere. The blank space did not mean there was no litter. It meant the group had no observations from that particular place.
Liv offered to visit the street the following Saturday with a partner. They used the same recording sheet as the other volunteers and found several problem spots near a bus stop. Before adding the new dots, Liv suggested a separate colour for streets that had not yet been checked.
The final map looked less attractive because some areas were marked incomplete. Nevertheless, the group could explain every colour honestly when it sent the report to the council. Liv kept a copy of the first version for volunteer training. Its cleanest street was the best example of why missing information should not be treated as good news.
