The library needed its meeting room for repairs, so our amateur chess club had to find another place for a month. We were offered tables in the market hall on Sunday mornings. Several members complained about the noise. I worried more about losing pieces among the vegetable stalls.
On our first Sunday, a fruit seller stopped to watch. She knew how the pieces moved but had never played a complete game. Our strongest player invited her to sit down during her break. Soon, two customers were watching as well, asking questions whenever somebody moved a knight.
The games took longer than usual because of the interruptions. At first, I wanted to put up a sign asking people to leave us alone. Then I noticed that our oldest member was happily explaining a move to three strangers. Perhaps our usual quiet room was also a rather closed door.
When the library reopened, most members wanted to return. We liked being able to concentrate, and the market tables were not always available. However, we kept one Sunday morning each month in the hall. The fruit seller joined us at the library, bringing her own board. She said she preferred playing where nobody asked her the price of apples.
