The mirror in our dance studio was covered while the wall behind it was being repaired. Our adult dance group would have to rehearse without seeing our movements. I complained because I depended on the mirror to remember which arm went up. Several others felt equally uncomfortable that evening.
Our instructor turned the group towards the window and asked us to watch one another instead. At first, this created more confusion. When someone made a mistake, the people behind copied it. I realised that I often followed a shape in the mirror without knowing what the movement was called.
We divided the dance into short sections and described each one aloud before trying it. A step that had seemed obvious became surprisingly hard to explain. However, once we agreed on simple words, I could remember the order without watching another person's feet. The room felt less crowded somehow.
When the mirror returned, we were glad to have it, but the instructor kept one exercise without it. Before our community performance, I quietly repeated our shared words behind the curtain. I still made one mistake on stage. This time, though, I knew where I was in the dance and joined the next section without searching for somebody to copy.
