The Contract With an Empty Friday

When Felix negotiated a four-day working week, he imagined Fridays as a private country. He would write, cook slowly and visit museums before they filled with weekend crowds. His salary fell accordingly. Within a month, however, friends had begun asking him to receive deliveries, drive relatives to appointments and wait for technicians who offered only broad arrival times.

None of the requests was unreasonable. That was the difficulty. Felix could rarely explain why he was unavailable without describing a plan that sounded less important than a broken boiler. He began inventing meetings. After lying about a morning conference while sitting in a park, he felt ridiculous: he had paid for free time and still needed fictional permission to use it.

He told his friends that Fridays were not generally available for errands, though they could ask in an emergency. One replied that she had thought he enjoyed helping. Felix typed a defensive paragraph, then replaced it with a shorter answer: he did enjoy it, but not as the automatic purpose of every free day. The reply received no immediate response.

The next Friday, he helped that same friend carry a table because he wanted to see her. Afterwards, he stayed for lunch and left when he had planned to. At the museum, he found the exhibition dull. He walked through it anyway, slightly amused by the expensive freedom to be disappointed in something he had chosen rather than useful at something chosen for him.
