The Email Scheduled for Midnight

On the final day of each year, Clara wrote an email to her future self and scheduled it for the next December. At thirty-five, she received a message demanding that she should have changed jobs, moved abroad and ended an uncertain relationship. She read it during lunch at the same desk, still dating the same person in the same city.

For a few minutes, the message felt like a report of failure. Then she remembered the evening she had written it: an argument, heavy rain and a missed train. She had converted a bad day into instructions for an entire year. Her relationship remained imperfect, but they had begun talking honestly. Her job had become more interesting after a change of manager.

That evening, she opened a new message and struggled to write any goals at all. Avoiding promises seemed cowardly; making them seemed unfair to a future person with information she did not yet possess. Instead, she described her present circumstances, including what she wanted, what she feared and which questions she could not answer without pretending to know more.

She scheduled the email, then changed its subject from Annual Review to News From Here. Next December might still bring disappointment. The altered title would not protect her from that. But it would allow the message to arrive as a letter from someone she had once been, rather than an unpaid supervisor checking whether she had completed a list written in the rain.
