The Box of Unclaimed Watches

Repairing watches had taught Soren how many ways people found to measure delay. Some customers arrived three days before their repair was due; others left watches for years. Before retiring, he contacted everyone in his unclaimed collection. A woman came for a silver watch she had left nine years earlier, apologising as though she were late for an appointment.

The watch had belonged to her husband, who had died shortly after she brought it in. She said she had repeatedly intended to collect it, but each visit seemed to require being ready for something she could not name. Soren had kept sending annual reminders. Now he wondered whether his careful administration had sounded like an accusation arriving every spring.

He offered to remove the old repair charge. She refused, explaining that she wanted this to be an ordinary transaction. They discussed the replacement glass and the slightly worn strap. Soren adjusted the time while she counted notes. Neither mentioned grief again. The practical conversation seemed to give them both somewhere comfortable to stand for a few minutes together.

After she left, Soren opened the remaining box. He had assumed each abandoned watch represented forgetfulness or indifference. Now the objects seemed heavier with possibilities he had no right to invent. He wrote another reminder, this time mentioning several ways to arrange collection. Then he closed the shop on time. Retirement would not require him to solve every absence before turning out the lights.
