The Translation Beside Her Signature

At the citizenship ceremony, Ines was asked whether she wanted her name pronounced in the local way or as her family said it. She had prepared for questions about documents, not this choice. For years, she had accepted the easier pronunciation at work. Hearing it now, just before signing an important page, made that convenience feel unexpectedly permanent.

She gave the official the family pronunciation, slowly. He repeated it incorrectly, tried again and smiled when she nodded. The small exchange delayed the line behind her. Ines felt embarrassed, then annoyed with herself for treating her own name as an inconvenience. Her son, who had grown up speaking both languages, watched without appearing to find anything unusual about it.

Afterwards, they went to a café where the server used the local version from her bank card. Ines did not correct him. Her son asked why she had bothered at the ceremony if she was going to let it go now. She searched for an explanation that would not sound inconsistent, then admitted that she had more energy for some moments than others.

At home, she placed the certificate beside a letter from her mother. The two documents described the same person in different languages and with different expectations. She took a photograph for her family, making sure both papers were visible. Then she put the certificate away and answered a work call, introducing herself as she always did. Nothing had to be settled by every conversation.
