The Room Left Out of the Tour

Whenever visitors came to their new house, Alice showed them every room except the smallest bedroom. It contained unopened boxes from her previous marriage, labelled only with her initials. Her partner never asked her to clear them, which she appreciated until his patience began to feel like another form of attention. The room became difficult to walk past.

One Saturday, she opened a box and found practical things: extension cables, a stapler, a saucepan lid. Their ordinariness annoyed her. She had been guarding a complicated past, and apparently part of it consisted of items available in any hardware shop. Beneath them lay a notebook in which she and her former husband had planned a trip never taken.

She read the budget, the hotel names and their arguments written as jokes in the margins. There was affection there, not merely evidence of a mistake. When her partner came upstairs, she expected to explain why she still had it. Instead, she asked whether he wanted the extension cables. He took two and left her alone without making a speech.

By evening, three boxes were empty and one remained. Alice labelled it more clearly and placed it on a high shelf. She had not erased the old marriage or granted it permanent control of a room. The next visitor saw a small bedroom with a chair beside the window. Alice did not mention the shelf, but she no longer avoided looking towards it.
