The Photograph With a Borrowed Smile

Community organiser Petra prepared a report about a public consultation. The room in her best photograph looked half empty, so a colleague suggested using an editing tool to fill the vacant chairs with realistic people. It would illustrate the atmosphere they had hoped for, he said, rather than the disappointing attendance on a rainy evening.

Petra rejected that suggestion, but she had already made another change. She had replaced one participant's tired expression with a smile from a different photograph taken minutes earlier. The adjustment seemed harmless until the participant requested a copy. He had attended to criticise the project, and the cheerful image made him appear pleased with its direction.

He did not accuse Petra of deliberately misleading anyone. Instead, he asked which version of the meeting the report was supposed to preserve. She looked again at the edited face. The tool had made a convincing picture while weakening the relationship between the picture and the event. Returning to the original would not make the report attractive, but attractiveness was not its main purpose.

Petra restored the tired expression and added a caption describing the meeting's purpose without claiming agreement. She also included the number of participants and a summary of their objections. Her colleague worried that the report now looked negative. At the next consultation, however, two new residents said they had come because those objections appeared in print. Petra photographed the room as it was, leaving empty chairs and folded arms exactly where they belonged.
