A Name Beneath the Wallpaper

Leila designed patterns for a small fabric studio. When a hotel ordered wallpaper based on her drawings, the owner congratulated the whole team. Leila expected no special ceremony, but the hotel's website described the pattern as the personal creation of its famous interior designer. Her original sketches were still pinned above her desk, complete with coffee stains.

The studio owner said that supplying designs without public credit was common in their business. Leila checked her employment agreement and found no promise that her name would appear. She could not simply claim ownership of everything she produced at work. Nevertheless, silence felt different from allowing someone else to claim that they had drawn the pattern.

Instead of posting an angry comparison online, she requested a meeting with the designer. He initially blamed a marketing assistant. Leila placed the sketches on the table and asked him to suggest an accurate description. The question left less room for argument than an accusation would have. After a pause, he wrote down the names of the studio and its design team.

The corrected page did not feature Leila individually. She accepted that compromise because two colleagues had adjusted the colours and prepared the repeating pattern. Back at the studio, she asked for a written credit policy on future projects. The owner reluctantly agreed to discuss one. Months later, Leila visited the hotel lobby. Nobody recognised her, and she had to buy her own coffee. Still, the little card beside the wallpaper named the people who had actually made it.
