The Voice Above Platform Four

When the railway company replaced its station announcements, Mara recognised her father's voice above platform four. He had recorded the original messages twenty years earlier, before he retired. Now the speakers were announcing destinations that had not existed during his working life. The sentences sounded convincing, except that he would never have stressed the town names that way.

At home, her father was less angry than she expected. He liked being useful again, even as a digital imitation. However, the company had never contacted him. His old contract allowed it to play his recordings, while saying nothing about creating new speech from them. Mara wanted to demand their immediate removal. He asked her not to speak on his behalf.

They attended a meeting together. A manager explained that hiring a different speaker would be expensive and that passengers found the familiar voice reassuring. Mara's father listened, then requested a copy of every new announcement. He also wanted the company to prevent his voice from appearing in advertisements. Familiarity, he said, was not the same as permission.

The company agreed to pause the new messages while they negotiated a separate licence. For several weeks, a young employee made the announcements live and occasionally stumbled over them. Mara found the mistakes strangely welcome. Her father disagreed; he thought passengers deserved clear information. When his approved digital voice finally returned, he took a train just to hear it. This time, he knew exactly what he had agreed to say.
