When our neighbourhood organised an evening event, the plan included music, food and a table for local projects. We had agreed to finish the amplified music at nine. Mira lived beside the square and supported the event on that basis. I was responsible for keeping the programme on time.
A late start pushed everything back. At a quarter to nine, the final band had played only two songs, and several people asked for a longer set. The singer suggested continuing quietly until half past nine. I could see Mira standing at her window, but she had not made a complaint.
I wanted everyone to enjoy the evening and disliked being the person who stopped it. Then I remembered that silence from a neighbour was not a new agreement. I explained the original finish time to the band and asked them to choose one final song. They were disappointed but accepted the decision.
At nine, the speakers went off, while volunteers began clearing tables. The next day, the singer asked whether the band could start earlier at a future event. Mira thanked us for keeping the promise and offered to help with planning. The evening had ended before some people wanted, but we still had neighbours willing to welcome another one.
