A Cup Deposit Nobody Could Explain

For the town's outdoor poetry evening, an environmental group lent reusable cups to the organisers. Visitors would pay a small deposit and receive it back when they returned a cup. The system seemed simple on paper. At the drinks table, however, the first customers asked several questions nobody answered consistently.

One volunteer said cups could be returned anywhere. Another said only the main table could return deposits. A third thought people needed a receipt. Radu, who was helping with the project, realised that each person had received a different version of the plan during the busy preparations that afternoon.

He asked the event manager to confirm one procedure. Then they placed a return table beside the main exit and put the same short instructions at every drinks station. Radu explained the change to the volunteers before serving anyone else. The delay was awkward, but continuing with conflicting answers would have been worse.

At the end of the evening, most cups came back, though several visitors kept theirs. The group counted what remained and recorded the missing cups without claiming a perfect result.
