The Student Who Asked for Silence

After twenty years away from education, Denise joined an evening history course. She loved the subject and usually arrived with questions written in a notebook. During discussions, however, she rarely spoke. By the time she had formed an answer, three other students had already offered theirs and moved on.

One evening, the tutor asked why a local factory had closed. Denise had found a useful detail in the reading, but once again the conversation passed her. On the bus home, she felt frustrated. I am not short of ideas, she thought. I just need a little longer to arrange them.

Before the next class, she explained this to the tutor. He suggested asking everyone to write for one minute before discussing a new question. Denise worried that this change would make her difficulty obvious, but the tutor introduced it as a way to collect more independent ideas from the whole class.

The room became quiet, and Denise wrote two clear sentences. When discussion began, she read one of them aloud. Another student built on her point. Later, several classmates said that the writing minute helped them too. Denise still did not speak first very often, but she stopped treating speed as the main sign that someone understood the lesson.
