My Sister’s Different Summer Memory

At a family meal, Hannah described the wonderful summers she and her sister had spent at their uncle's farm. She remembered warm evenings, fresh bread and sleeping beneath the same bright blanket. Her younger sister, Beth, listened without smiling. Finally, she said those summers had been lonely.

Hannah immediately disagreed. They had been together almost every day, so how could Beth have felt alone? Beth reminded her that Hannah had followed their older cousins everywhere. Beth was usually too small to join their games, and their uncle often asked her to stay near the house.

For a moment, Hannah wanted to produce evidence: photographs, old letters, anything that proved her version. Then she realised that Beth had not said the farm was unpleasant for everyone. She was describing her own days there. Hannah put down her fork and asked what Beth had done while the others played.

Beth talked about making houses from empty boxes and sharing bread with the farm cat. Their mother added details neither sister remembered. The meal lasted longer than expected. Afterwards, Hannah still loved her memories of the farm. But when she described those summers again, she stopped saying that they had both been happy. There was room in the family story for two different summers happening at once.
