Please Knock Before Coming In

After losing her flat, thirty-year-old Marta moved back into her parents' house. She was grateful for the spare room, although the small bed still had the cover she had chosen at fifteen. Her mother often entered without knocking, carrying clean clothes or asking about dinner.

At first, Marta said nothing. She worried that asking for privacy would sound ungrateful. Then, during an important video call, her mother appeared behind her with a pile of socks. Marta became angry and spoke more sharply than she intended. Her mother left without a word.

Later, Marta went downstairs. She apologised for her tone, but explained that the room was also her office. Her mother admitted that she still imagined Marta as the teenager who always wanted company. Neither of them had discussed how living together would work now that things were different.

They agreed on a simple rule: knock and wait for an answer. Marta would also bring her washing downstairs herself. The next morning, her mother knocked with great ceremony and announced a delivery of one missing sock. Marta laughed and invited her in. The rule did not make the house less welcoming. It gave them both a clearer way to share it.
