At lunch, my cousin Leila told me that she planned to move in with her partner. I was excited and almost wrote to our family group immediately. Then I noticed that she had lowered her voice before giving me the news.
I asked if the rest of the family already knew. Leila shook her head. She wanted to tell her parents herself that evening, then speak to our grandmother. She had told me first because she wanted help choosing a good time to call.
We checked the family calendar and decided that seven would work. I kept my phone in my bag during the afternoon. When my aunt called about something else, I answered her question without adding Leila's news to the conversation.
The next morning, Leila posted a photograph of two keys in the family group. Under it, she wrote the news in her own words. I could finally send my congratulations. My message was not the first, but it arrived exactly when Leila was ready.
