During a board game, Ellis made a joke about his friend Tom always losing. Everyone laughed except Tom, who put his cards down. A few minutes later, he said he had to leave. Ellis thought about the joke after the door closed.
The next morning, Ellis sent Tom a short message. He said the joke was unkind and he was sorry. He did not tell Tom to laugh more or explain that everyone else had enjoyed it. He asked if they could talk later.
Tom called that evening. He explained that the joke had embarrassed him in front of two new people. Ellis listened and promised not to make Tom the subject of similar jokes. Tom said he still wanted to join the next games evening.
When Tom arrived the following week, Ellis welcomed him normally. Nobody made a speech about their conversation. They chose a game in which everyone worked together against the clock. They lost as a team, then asked for another round.
