When Max visited his friend Ivo, he walked straight into the sitting room. His shoes left wet marks on a new rug. Ivo looked down but said nothing. He did not want his guest to feel unwelcome just after arriving.
Ten minutes later, Max stood up to get his bag. He noticed the marks and asked for a cloth. While they cleaned the rug, Ivo explained that he usually asked people to remove their shoes. Today, he had felt too shy.
Max took off his shoes immediately. He said he would rather hear a clear request than damage something by mistake. Ivo found a spare pair of slippers and put the wet shoes on a tray by the front door.
Before their next meeting, Ivo sent a message asking everyone to bring indoor shoes. Max arrived with bright green slippers shaped like frogs. They looked strange beside his dark trousers, but the rug stayed clean and the room was full of laughter.
