At Sunday lunch, everyone in the Lewis family talked at once. Their father began a story about meeting an old school friend, but his daughter asked for salt. Then his son started talking about a football match on television.
Dad stopped speaking and ate his potatoes. His youngest daughter, Rose, noticed. After lunch, she asked him to finish the story in the kitchen. It was about a school play, a missing hat, and a very surprised music teacher.
Rose enjoyed it and wanted the others to hear it too. At tea, she said, 'Dad has a good story. Can we let him finish this time?' Her brother looked embarrassed, but he put down his phone and listened.
Dad told the whole story, including the part about wearing a flowerpot instead of a hat. Everyone laughed. When he finished, he asked about the football match. His son had plenty to say, and this time there was space for him too.
