The old merchant's house opened to visitors once a month. At the entrance, a guide handed Leon and his friend blue fabric covers. Leon thought they were small bags for carrying shoes. He sat down and began untying his laces.
The guide stopped him with a friendly smile. The covers went over shoes, not instead of them. They helped protect the old wooden floor inside the house. Leon pulled one over each shoe and stood up carefully beside his friend.
Their feet looked enormous, which made them both laugh. The guide asked everyone to walk slowly and stay with the group. In the first room, Leon noticed a beautiful pattern in the floor. Now he understood why the museum wanted to protect it.
They visited the kitchen, the dining room and a small study facing the street. At the exit, they removed the covers and placed them in a basket. Leon did not need to tie his laces again. He had only loosened one shoe before the guide explained his mistake.
