Instead of taking photographs, the weekend walking group made sound maps. Their leader gave everyone a blank sheet and asked them to draw the route. At each stop, they would add a simple picture of something they could hear nearby.
Farah was not good at drawing, so she felt nervous about the task. At the square, she heard water from a fountain and drew three blue lines. Beside the bus station, she added a small rectangle for the sound of engines.
The group then entered a quiet lane behind the shops. Farah heard a window opening, a bicycle bell and music from an upstairs room. She used arrows and short words when she could not draw the sounds. Nobody asked for a perfect picture.
At the final stop, everyone put their maps on a bench. The same route looked different on every page. Farah's map included a dog that nobody else had heard. She kept the sheet inside her town guide, ready to compare it with the sounds on another day.
