A river divided the two halves of Owen's favourite cycling route. Usually, he used the road bridge, but on Sunday he wanted to try the little ferry. He had seen people taking bicycles across, so he rode down to the landing.
A board showed one price for a passenger and another price for a bicycle. Owen thought he needed both tickets. The ferry worker explained that the bicycle ticket already included its rider. Owen paid once and waited beside his bicycle.
When the ferry arrived, the worker asked everyone to walk on slowly. Owen pushed his bicycle to the marked space and held it during the short crossing. From the water, the road bridge looked much higher than it did from the path.
On the other side, Owen followed the riverside route home. The ferry had not saved much time, but he enjoyed seeing the town from a different angle. He kept the small paper ticket in his map case and marked the landing for another ride.
