Alex has new roller skates and a blue helmet. He joins a beginner class in an empty outdoor sports area. His teacher, Kim, asks everyone to stand near the wall.
Alex can move forward, but stopping is difficult. He holds the wall with one hand. Kim shows him how to use the brake at the back of one skate.
First, he tries without moving. Then he goes a short distance. His arms move everywhere, but his feet stay under him. He presses the brake and stops before the white line.
Alex does not want to go fast today. He practices the same short trip five times. On the last try, his arms are still. Kim gives him a big smile.
