The Notebook Returned Without Answers

At a reunion of former tenants, Celine received a notebook she had left in a shared flat twenty years earlier. Its pages contained shopping lists, ambitious career plans and detailed complaints about a man whose surname she could no longer remember. She read them on the train home, startled by how confidently that younger woman had judged everyone around her.

One page described Celine's present partner as dull. They had met briefly at a party before becoming friends much later. She considered tearing out the page, although nobody else was likely to see it. The judgement felt disloyal, as if a sentence written long ago could damage years of shared life simply by continuing to exist inside a cardboard cover.

At home, she showed it to him. He laughed, then remembered thinking she had been exhausting. Their first impressions were neither flattering nor entirely false. Celine wondered how much their later selves had changed and how much they had merely encountered each other under kinder circumstances. The notebook offered no answer, only a list of groceries beneath the offending sentence.

She put it on a shelf without correcting anything. The next morning, she bought oranges because the old shopping list had unexpectedly reminded her of them. While carrying them home, she thought about the young woman who had written so many confident predictions. Celine felt no need to forgive or obey her. They could share a taste for oranges without agreeing on the future of every man at a party.
