The bird group meets at seven beside the park gates. Sam expects a long walk and wears strong shoes. The leader asks everyone to stand still near the first tree.
They listen for a full minute. Sam can hear a bus, a dog and some leaves. Then a clear little sound comes from above. The leader points to a branch.
A small bird sits there with its head up. Sam can see it without binoculars. He writes its color in his notebook. The group moves a few steps and stops again.
After an hour, they are still near the gates. Sam laughs at his clean walking shoes. This is not a fast walk, but his notebook already has five different birds in it.
